pericardiocentesis

Definition

It is the aspiration of pericardial fluid. Done under ultrasonographic or echocardiographic guidance. Aspiration needle is introduced through the left costoxiphoid junction, directed upwards, backward, and towards the left shoulder.

Complications

• Injury to the coronary artery and ventricles.
Arrhythmia.
• Bleeding.
